I remember the exactly as if were yesterday, sitting on the bus in fourth grade chatting at my friends about my dog, and lizards, and a crush on a boy. The bus windows open and the dry desert air swirling around and the bus doors opened and in walked a girl with the face of angel, with deep blue eyes, and golden hair. I sat transfixed, by her beautiful shoulder length hair, that was nothing like my thin mousy brown mop.
The wind coming in from the half open bus windows lifted her blond locks that curled them around her face like an angelic Sprite. I could not stop admiring at how angelic and perfect she looked with the sunlight bouncing off her hair, that was until she smiled, and her teeth crooked and misaligned sent a shutter of repulsion down into my belly, and yet I couldn’t look away. The brightness that filled her eyes, just moments before vanished as she realized that I starring at her unsightly smile, and she turned her body away from me to face the window, and left me gazing once again at the beauty and light that bounced glistening off her shiny Blond hair.
I followed this girl through junior high, but I never could get the courage to speak with her, to face her knowing that I was so shallow, and it made me feel small. She walked the hallways with her one and only friend, and when she laughed she always covered her mouth with hand, book, or other whatever she had on hand. The kids could be cruel, and mean at times, I guess that is enough to tell you, without saying exactly what was said.
Our beginning of our freshman year I heard her father passed away, and she and her mother had moved away. The years passed, but I always seemed to gauge the attractiveness of people on my reaction to seeing such a beautiful girl, who by simply smiling could lose her appeal. I have always felt guilty, as I have speak to my children on kindness, and being nonjudgmental, and yet there will always be no matter how hard I try a piece of me that feel guilty for being so small minded, and unkind.
I found the girl again, now we are thirty nine, and she married and has two kids close to the age of mine. She is still beautiful and bright, and I am proud to say she is now and always will be a wonderful friend of mine. She tells me all the stories of rejection, and sadness her bad teeth had caused. She tells me of dreaming of finding money so she could have her teeth fixed, but her mother said if she found money it would just have to go to pay the back rent.
This beautiful resourceful woman took night classes at the junior college, and enrolled in a dental assistant program. She graduated, and then worked her way through college to get a degree as a dental hygienist. She went to work for a cosmetic dentist who helped her fix her crooked, unsightly teeth. She has told me how it was such a life changing event, and how it had transformed her life in ways no one could understand, unless they themselves had witnessed and felt, the distaste seen in the eyes of others when she forgot and happened to smile. She had transformed into a butterfly, and was no longer a moth. She worked in a program to assist children who have no money for dental care, and even as she told them how beautiful and special they were, she knew for some of them it will be a life time of being unable to enjoy the freedom of an uncensored smile
