It is often said that one area of your body is connected to other parts. The feet can be connected to the head and massaging them can relieve headaches and migraines. It has now been discovered by surgeons that the teeth are connected to the heart.
People with good dental hygiene and that frequently brush their teeth are less likely to get cardiovascular disease which can lead to heart attacks. Professor Howard Jenkinson from Bristol University, made the discovery in a joint effort with the Royal College of Surgeons. The discovery was made whilst they were researching into how blood cells are affected by bacteria.
Around 700 different strains of bacteria can be found in the mouth. People that forget to use their toothbrush enough tend to suffer as a result of poor dental hygiene. This means you could end up with bleeding gums, gingivitis and other oral diseases which are attacked by the bacteria in your mouth. If you have bleeding in your mouth the bacteria can enter the blood stream and can be an independent factor in causing heart disease. These independent risk factors for heart disease are caused by oral bacterial infections brought on by bacteria like Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguinis.
Findings such as this explain how certain antibiotics fail to work against heart disease. Professor Jenkinson and his team are collaborating with Dr Steve Kerringan in order to develop a solution to the problem. Until a cure is found it is recommended you take care of your teeth by brushing them regularly with an electric toothbrush.
